Join me on this episode of the Elements of Community as I chat with Steve Rix, founder of PlayLab, about the secret ingredient to building a thriving community: play! If you want to learn how to infuse more play into your community, join us for this fun and insightful conversation. See you there!

Steve’s 10-year journey experimenting with Play has led him to realize that it’s more than just a childish pastime or weekend activity for adults. Play is a state of being that is present, authentic, connected, imaginative, and purposeless. It’s a vital component of a community that can resolve conflicts within it.

Steve shares an example of how young boys in some African tribes use competitive sword fencing as a rite of passage to become men and deepen connections with each other. Play can be a glue that binds a community together and becomes the heartbeat of that community.

Moreover, Play can be a language that creates connections and propagates peace, even in situations of military conflict. It can also be a totem or physical message that reminds people of something and helps them access creativity and new ways of thinking.

In our conversation, we discuss the importance of finding stimuli that resonate with us and avoiding dissonant or negative stimuli that hinder connection and community. We explore the potential of play as a language for experimentation and growth. Steve’s belief that play is restorative, connective, and inspiring has led him to design his business around it. He shares his vision to build a legacy where companies create playful happy people everywhere and invites everyone to experiment with play and pay attention to their emotions when in a playful state.

Other subjects we covered on the show:

  • We explored different forms of stimuli that can affect the mind and facilitate learning or focus, such as auditory, visual, and tactile stimuli.
  • We also discussed music as a form of stimuli that can serve different purposes depending on the individual, such as being a stressor that helps shut out background noise or a resonant tone that triggers a particular response in the brain.
  • Lastly, Steve invites everyone to pay attention to their emotions when in a playful state and to experiment with play, as it can lead to positive outcomes.
